Creation Science & Creationism
Creation Science and the Christian Worldview
The question of origins is ultimately a question about worldview. How a person understands the origin of the universe, the earth, life, and humanity affects how he understands God, Scripture, human nature, morality, purpose, and the meaning of history.
The Bible begins with a straightforward declaration: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Scripture presents God as the Creator of all things and presents human beings as creatures made in His image. The biblical account of creation is therefore not merely a scientific question. It is foundational to Christian theology and the Christian understanding of reality.
Creation science seeks to investigate the natural world while taking seriously the biblical account of creation and early earth history. Creation scientists argue that scientific evidence can be interpreted within a biblical framework and challenge the assumption that evolutionary and deep-time explanations are the only legitimate interpretations of the evidence.
Creationism, Evolution, and Worldview
The origins debate involves competing interpretations of evidence as well as competing assumptions about reality.
Biblical creationism affirms that God intentionally created the universe and everything in it, and that the biblical account of creation and early history is historically trustworthy.
Young-earth creationism generally understands Genesis 1–11 as describing relatively recent creation, a historical Adam and Eve, the entrance of death through the Fall, and a global Flood in the days of Noah. Many of the organizations listed below hold this position.
Old-earth creationism accepts an ancient age for the earth and universe while maintaining that God is the Creator and that life ultimately exists because of His purposeful creative activity.
Intelligent design argues that certain features of the universe and living organisms are best explained by intelligent causation rather than undirected natural processes. Intelligent design and biblical creationism overlap in some arguments but are not identical positions.
Theistic evolution attempts to reconcile evolutionary theory with belief in God by proposing that God created through evolutionary processes. Christians should carefully examine the theological and philosophical implications of this approach, particularly its understanding of Genesis, Adam and Eve, the Fall, and the origin of death.
The organizations below are primarily associated with biblical creationism, particularly young-earth creationism and the defense of the historical reliability of Genesis.

Creation Science and the Question of Scientific Interpretation
Creation science does not begin with the assumption that the natural world can be understood independently of God. Instead, it recognizes that scientific investigation always involves interpretation and that interpretations are influenced by assumptions about reality, knowledge, causation, and the history of the universe.
A Christian worldview begins with God’s revelation and then seeks to understand God’s creation consistently with that revelation. This does not mean ignoring scientific evidence. It means recognizing that evidence does not interpret itself.
For example, fossils are real physical evidence. The question is what geological and biological history best explains those fossils. Geological layers are observable. The question is what processes produced them and over what period of time. Biological similarities are observable. The question is whether those similarities are best explained by common ancestry, common design, or another model.
This is why the creation-evolution debate is fundamentally a worldview debate as well as a scientific debate.
Creation, Evolution, and Presuppositions
A major issue in the origins debate is the distinction between observational science and claims about unobserved historical events.
Christians should recognize that scientists can make reliable observations about the present while disagreeing profoundly about what those observations mean concerning the unobserved past.
Historical reconstructions necessarily involve assumptions. For this reason, Christians should ask questions such as:
What assumptions about the past are being made?
Does the proposed explanation require naturalistic assumptions?
How does the interpretation account for the evidence?
What predictions does the model make?
Does the interpretation fit with the historical claims of Scripture?
Are alternative explanations being fairly considered?
The goal is not to reject science. The goal is to recognize that science itself is practiced within a philosophical framework.
Creation and the Christian Faith
The doctrine of creation provides the foundation for many other biblical doctrines.
If God created the universe, then He is its rightful Lord.
If mankind was created in God’s image, human life possesses objective dignity and value.
If Adam and Eve were historical people, the Fall is a historical event with consequences for the human race.
If death entered the world through sin, then the biblical doctrine of redemption is connected to the historical reality of the Fall.
If Jesus Christ is the Creator, as Colossians 1:16 teaches, then creation is directly connected to Christology.
The doctrine of creation therefore affects theology, anthropology, ethics, salvation, the doctrine of sin, and the Christian understanding of history.
