Christian Film

Christian Film and the Biblical Worldview

Film is one of the most influential storytelling mediums in modern culture.

Movies do more than entertain. They communicate ideas about God, humanity, morality, family, justice, sexuality, suffering, redemption, courage, authority, beauty, and the meaning of life. Even films that never mention Christianity can communicate a powerful worldview through their characters, conflicts, assumptions, and conclusions.

Christians should therefore learn to think carefully about film.

This does not mean that every movie must be explicitly Christian. Nor does it mean that Christians should simply reject mainstream cinema. It means that Christians should learn to recognize the ideas communicated through visual storytelling and evaluate those ideas according to Scripture.

Christian filmmakers also have an opportunity to create stories that communicate truth, goodness, beauty, courage, sacrifice, redemption, and the gospel in compelling ways.

The resources below include Christian filmmakers, production companies, distributors, streaming services, film festivals, industry organizations, and Christian movie-review resources.

Christian Film and Worldview

Christian film can serve several different purposes.

Explicitly Christian films seek to communicate biblical themes, Christian doctrine, the gospel, or Christian testimony.

Faith-based films may incorporate Christian themes or values but can vary considerably in their theological depth and worldview.

Family-friendly films may not be explicitly Christian but may contain themes compatible with biblical morality.

Mainstream films can contain both truth and error and should be evaluated carefully rather than accepted or rejected solely on the basis of their marketing category.

Christians should therefore avoid the assumption that the label “Christian movie” automatically means “biblically sound movie.”

Likewise, Christians should not assume that a movie produced outside the Christian film industry has nothing worthwhile to say.

The proper question is:

What does this story teach me about reality, God, humanity, morality, and the meaning of life?

Christian Film and Cultural Engagement

Why Film Matters

Stories shape imagination.

A movie can make an idea feel normal before a viewer has consciously evaluated whether the idea is true. It can portray virtue as admirable or foolish, redefine family, normalize sexual behavior, glorify violence, portray authority as oppressive, or present rebellion as heroic.

At the same time, a movie can communicate important truths about sacrifice, courage, justice, forgiveness, suffering, redemption, loyalty, family, friendship, and the consequences of sin.

Christians should therefore learn to become discerning viewers rather than merely consumers of entertainment.

How Should Christians Evaluate a Movie?

A Christian evaluation of a film should involve more than asking whether there is profanity, violence, or sexual content.

Those questions matter, but worldview analysis goes deeper.

Ask:

What does this story teach about God?

What does it teach about human nature?

What does it teach about right and wrong?

What does it portray as the highest good?

What does it teach about freedom?

What does it teach about authority?

What does it teach about family and marriage?

What does it teach about sexuality?

What does it teach about suffering?

What does it teach about forgiveness?

What does it teach about justice?

What does it teach about death?

What does it teach about redemption?

Who is the hero?

What makes the hero admirable?

What actions are rewarded?

What actions are condemned?

What assumptions about reality are never questioned?

These questions help Christians move beyond simply asking whether a film is “clean” and toward evaluating what the film is actually communicating.

Christian Film Does Not Mean Perfect Film

Christians should also recognize that Christian filmmaking has limitations.

A movie can have a Christian message while suffering from weak writing, poor acting, simplistic characterization, historical inaccuracies, or theological problems.

Conversely, a mainstream movie can contain profound insights into human nature or moral responsibility even though the filmmakers do not share a Christian worldview.

This is why Christians need both discernment and appreciation.

We can reject false ideas while recognizing truth.

We can identify moral problems while appreciating artistic excellence.

We can enjoy beauty without accepting every idea communicated by the artist.

And we can recognize that God, as Creator, is the ultimate source of truth, goodness, and beauty.

Film, Art, and the Christian Worldview

The Christian worldview provides a particularly rich foundation for artistic storytelling.

Christianity explains why human beings create.

We create because we are made in the image of a creative God.

Christianity explains why stories matter.

We live in God’s story of creation, Fall, redemption, and restoration.

Christianity explains why evil matters.

Evil is not merely a social construct but a rebellion against God’s good order.

Christianity explains why sacrifice and redemption resonate with audiences.

Human beings live in a fallen world and intuitively recognize the need for rescue.

Christianity also explains why beauty matters.

God created a world characterized by order, variety, creativity, and beauty, and human beings are capable of recognizing and producing beauty.

Christian filmmaking can therefore do more than preach.

It can tell compelling stories that illuminate truth about God’s world.

Film, Discernment, and the Family

Parents have a responsibility to help their children become wise consumers of media.

Instead of merely establishing a list of prohibited movies, parents can teach children how to evaluate stories.

Ask children:

What was this movie trying to make you believe?

What did the hero believe?

Was the hero right?

What did the movie portray as good?

What did it portray as evil?

Did the movie’s view of morality agree with Scripture?

What biblical truths were reflected in the story?

What false ideas were presented?

How would the story have been different if the characters had followed biblical principles?

This turns movie watching from passive entertainment into an opportunity for worldview education.
